UPDATE ON OKON UWAH: COMMISSIONER DESIGNATE FINGERED
By Our Reporter ( News/ Crime: Archives)
It emerged last week that the immediate –past Member Representing Ukanafun State Constituency in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Simon Akpan may have allegedly had a hand in the gruesome murder of the late Rt. Hon. (Obong) Okon Joseph Uwah.
Aniekan Akpan who has been nominated by the Udom Emmanuel –led People’s Democratic Party (PDP) administration of Akwa Ibom State, it was gathered, had sought to be re-elected the second time into the State’s Assembly during the last PDP Primaries against the laid-down zoning principle in the area.
Investigation revealed that the principal suspect in the late Obong Okon Uwah’s murder, Hon. Effiom Jacob Abai, who is currently cooling his feet in the Ikot Ekpene Prison over the crime had been a Special Adviser on Political Affairs, to Rt. Hon. Aniekan Akpan when the later was the Chairman of Ukanafun Local Government Council.
Sources in Ukanafun confided in our paper that prior to the killing of Uwah on March 18, 2015 , series of meetings were convened at Hon. Aniekan Akpan’s residence of which top on the agenda was allegedly the elimination of top stalwarts of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the area.
It was further learnt that in one of such meetings, a key stakeholder in Hon. Emmanuel Ukoette’s re-election Campaign Committee (name withheld) had opposed any idea of elimination and walked out on them.
Our paper gathered that since the arrest and detention of Effiom Abai, the former lawmaker (Aniekan Akpan) has been visiting the suspect in the prison and assuredly boasted that he (Abai) would be granted bail and subsequently acquitted.
A top security source told our reporter that following the murder of Okon Uwah, the Policemen who swooped on the suspects allegedly found some incriminating materials in the house of one of the suspects, Ekikere Abai (now at large).
Our source who preferred anonymity said “… available evidence from the Ikot Ekpene Prisons show that he (Rt. Hon. Aniekan Akpan) has been visiting Effiom Abai in the prison almost on weekly basis. Even though at times, he would disguise, not using his official car as (then) a member of the State Assembly, his Visit would be tracked.
“Campaign materials as well as other items recovered from one of the suspect’s (Ekikere Abai) house which is now with the police show that Okon Uwah’s killers were working for Aniekan Akpan, Hon. Emmanuel Ukoette and a certain political party”.
Our paper reliably gathered that Hon. Aniekan Akpan’s nomination by Governor Udom Emmanuel as commissioner designate was not un-connected with the former’s role during the just concluded elections in Ukanafun prominent of which was political violence leading to Okon Uwah’s death.
A source confided in our paper that “… three of them, Hon. Emmanuel Ukoette (member of the National Assembly), Rt. Hon. Aniekan Akpan (former law maker, now commissioner designate) and Hon. Effion Jacob Abai (Vice Chairman, Ukanafun) were masterminds of political violence in Ukanafun . They (PDP) are doing everything possible to make sure that Effiom Abai is acquitted so as to become the chairman of Ukanafun as he was promised”.
It was further learnt that while Hon. Effiom Abai is in detention for the alleged murder, he is still receiving his entitlements as Vice Chairman, while the wives of the fleeing suspects and relatives are being given stipends regularly, courtesy of Aniekan Akpan
Meanwhile, our paper has also uncovered a move by counsel to the prime suspect (Abai), Mr. Victor Dick Ukut to file a bail application in Ikot Ekpene High Court, seeking a no case answer in favour of the suspect(s).
Barr. Victor Ukut who is from Adat Ifang in the same Ukanafun is allegedly in connivance, capitalizing on the lackluster attitude of the police investigating the matter to pervert justice in favour of the suspected murderers.
