Some aggrieved indigenes of Use Ndon in Ibiono Ibom Local Government area have risen in condemnation of the recent media hype employed by the Akwa Ibom state Publicity Secretary of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Barr Iniobong Ememobong, to publicize the sharing of what they described as ‘demeaning Christmas rice’.
It would be recalled that the State’ Spokesman of the PDP, Barr Iniobong had last week, shared some measures of rice to his kinsmen at his home town, Use Ndon, in the spirit of the yuletide. Few days after the gesture, photographs of the sharing exercise were, according to our respondents, circulated in the media by his publicists.
Reacting to the development, some relatives of the affected beneficiaries, who spoke to our correspondent on Tuesday, said publishing photographs of their relatives to score cheap political points over some inconsequential donation was unacceptable. One of the complainants, who gave his name as Mr. Ekpenyong said the State PDP Publicity Secretary action was not only insulting but also a show of the level of impoverishment the party has reduced the people of the state to.
Ekpenyong said: “We are so embarrassed to see images of our fathers, mothers and siblings publicized in the mass media by Iniobong Ememobong’s publicists over some demeaning few cups of rice. It is insulting to note that while other politicians in other places share bags of rice to their supporters and kinsmen without publicizing, the State Publicity Secretary of the ruling People’s Democratic Party, Barr Iniobong Ememobong, is sharing a meager ten cups of rice in polythene bags and caused same to be publicized by his media men.
Even though Iniobong’s inglorious act has exposed the level of impoverishment the PDP government in the state, in which he is a stakeholder, has reduced the people to, I want to say that this is unacceptable and condemnable”.
Another complainant who claimed that her attention was drawn to the photographs on Facebook by her friends, while condemning it, also gave the PDP publicist a forty-eight hour ultimatum to order immediate removal of the embarrassing post or face a coordinated media protest.
“I don’t understand what some of these guys who call themselves politicians have turned themselves into. The other day it was a member of the State House of Assembly, representing Uyo State Constituency, Hon. Monday Eyo who watched with satisfaction a poor woman kneeling before him just because of some thousand naira notes. Today, it is the Akwa Ibom State Publicity Secretary of PDP, Barr Iniobong Ememobong publicizing photographs where he was sharing some cups of rice to people. This is embarrassing. We are giving him forty-eight hours to delete the embarrassing posts else we are going to embark on a well-coordinated media protest against him”.
