In recognition of his role towards the development of Akwa Ibom State, Ibibio Nation, the fourth largest ethnic group in Nigeria and the largest in Akwa Ibom are rolling out drums to celebrate the immediate-past governor of the state, His Excellency, Arc. (Obong) Victor Attah.
In a chat with Journalists in the State, a member of the Central Planning Committee of the celebration, Mr. Udeme Nana noted that the desire to celebrate the Akwa Edwek Ekpe stemmed from the need to recognize his position as the father of the modern- day Akwa Ibom State. He also hinted that Ibibio people are proud of the Former Governor, stressing that to do justice to him, his people must celebrate him while alive.
He further stated that Akwa Esop Ima Isong Ibibio which nominated Obong Attah as one of the delegates from Akwa Ibom state for the just concluded National Confab held in Abuja and the entire Ibibios were proud of his incisive contributions during the conference, hence the need to appreciate him for a job well done.
His words “Obong Attah is a father figure as far as the modern-day Akwa Ibom state is concerned. So Ibibio people have decided that the Former Governor deserves to be celebrated for what he did for Akwa Ibom State when he was the Governor. And if you followed the just concluded National confab, you will agree with me that he performed creditably well to the admiration of Akwa Ibom people in particular and Nigerians in general.
“Because of his track record and experience, he was unanimously nominated and adopted as the leader of all the Delegates from Akwa Ibom state. Again, he was the Co-Chairman of one of the most powerful Committees at the conference, the Committee on Devolution of Power. Obong Attah was also one of the member of the Fifty Wise Men selected by the leadership of the Conference to solve some knotty issues which arose during the confab. So in all these responsibilities, he performed creditably well. That is why we, the Ibibios want to celebrate him”.
