A Special Police Squad from the Force Headquarters, Abuja on Friday night stormed the Shelter Afrique residence of the Executive Chairman of Mbo Local Government Area, Hon. Victor Antai and arrested him, our Paper can authoritatively report.
A source from the Force Headquarters said the directive to arrest Hon. Antai followed a petition against him which bordered on electoral violence and thuggery during the just concluded elections.
Our Paper gathered that after a successful arrest of the Mbo Council Boss and was to be conveyed to Abuja, Antai reportedly pleaded not to be forced to use land transport as was preferred by the Special security Squad. He was reported to have begged that they travelled by air on Saturday on his bill. It was gathered that the State Commissioner of Police, Gabriel Aschong expectedly called the team and allegedly offered them bribe to free him ( Antai).
Upon refusal to compromise, the CP was said to have pleaded with the Police team to meet with him on Saturday at 7am. After failed attempts by the CP Aschong to stall the arrest, he pleaded that the team obliged the use of air transport which was slated for 11 am on Saturday, 6th June, 2015. Hon. Antai was however detained at the Shelter Afrique Police Station.
Our Paper gathered that while the team, alongside the arrested ‘suspect’ were at the Ibom International Airport, the immediate past governor of Akwa Ibom state, Chief Godswill Akpabio called the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase and pleaded that he be allowed to provide Hon. Antai on Monday, which the IGP obliged.
As at press time, other Local Government Chairmen in the state who were involved in one act of electoral violence or the other were said to be scampering for safety. It was learnt that the Chairmen of Etinan, Essien Udim and Nsit Atai LGAs, Isantim Kenneth Okon, Nse Ntuen and Mark Esset respectively, were tops in the list of council chairmen on the wanted list.
Efforts to get the state Commissioner of Police, Gabriel Aschong to comment on the matter failed as calls to his known telephone numbers were not successful.
