The National Executive Committee of the All Progressives Congress has said it extended the tenure of the current National Working Committee led by Chief John Oyegun, States, Chapters and Ward Executive Committees across the nation to avoid going into the 2019 elections with a confused party.

Addressing journalists after the NEC meeting, Governor of Kogi state, His Excellency, Yahaya Bello, said the tenure of the current executives of the party which ought to have elapsed in June this year was given an extension of one year to enable the Asiwaju Bola Tinubu-led Reconciliation Committee complete its assignment of bringing all the aggrieved members of the party together.

He noted that the decision which was taken by the APC organ was in line with Article 13 of the party Constitution.

He said “At the end of the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting today, a major decision was taken in line with the Constitution of our party. We are all aware that the tenure of the current NWC (National Working Committee) and the executive members of this party- both elected and appointed- comes to an end in June this year.

“Considering the time left for the party to conduct all the congresses and conventions and considering that our leader, Senator Tinubu, has been charged with the responsibility of reconciling all aggrieved members of our party, we cannot afford to approach the general elections with more disputes and crisis.

“So, relying on Article 13 of our Constitution, which empowers the NEC to carry out the function of the convention, the NEC has decided to extend the tenure of the current NWC and other executive committees at various levels for another twelve months starting from June 30”.

On whether or not the convention of the party would still hold, the Kogi Chief Executive, himself a member of NEC said “Let me tell you that this will not stop the convention of the party. But to go into elective congresses is what we are trying to avoid relying on the constitution of our party. As a matter of fact, Mr. President believes in ensuring that there are congresses and convention across board.

“However, how would you manage the crisis that will arise thereabout? Let me give you instances, in Ekiti and Osun states, state congresses were postponed similarly in 2014 ahead of the elections. Just two states to avoid crisis, talk more of the whole country. So that is why this decision was taken”.

It would be recalled that 329 Ward Chairmen of the APC in Akwa Ibom state recently passed a vote of confidence on the Dr. Amadu Attai-led State Executive Committee in Akwa Ibom amidst intense rumors of some members of the party, allegedly brandishing lists of ‘new’ State, Chapter and Ward executive Committees.

The Profile Newspaper gathered that the decision to extend the tenure of the State Executive Committees, which preceded an earlier confidence vote on the Chief Oyegun-led NWC by forum of APC State Chairmen, was taken after a voice vote.
